The Fernie Arts Scene

Mosaic image of Downtown Fernie showing how diverse the Fernie arts scene is.

Fernie’s art scene is growing and Fernie is home to many world-renowned artists. From authors such as Angie Abdou to painters like Angela Morgan. Photographers such as Mark Gallup and Henry Georgi to potters like Sarah Pike. Many of Fernie’s residents draw inspiration from the surrounding environment and community.

Local Inspiration

With mountains, rivers, lakes and trails quite literally out the front door, it’s no wonder many know the city as an outdoor recreationist’s heaven. But the quality of life, and diversity of people that are drawn to Fernie, is as much due to the range of artists and growing arts scene in the community as it is to the outdoor pursuits. The eclectic nature of Fernie’s residents even inspired one local artist to capture a portrait of every man, woman, and child who call Fernie home. Kyle Hamilton’s I AM Fernie project showcases the individuality, yet commonalities of many local residents.

The Fernie Arts Station and Fernie Art Co-op

The Fernie Arts Station is the hub for most art in the community. It hosts many classes, exhibitions, and a summer favourite, the Wednesday Night Social. Located in the historic train station, it is definitely worth a stop for all visitors to the historic downtown core. There are also many boutique galleries along 2nd Ave. When strolling downtown doing your shopping, pop into the Arts Co-op. It showcases a cross-section of artists and local artisanal products on offer. Or visit Brian Pollock’s photo gallery to see stunning imagery from Fernie and beyond. Just off the main strip is a tiny little space showing work by Tara Higgins and Kerri Holmes, the HH Gallery. There are also many works of public art such as a mural and sculpture by Mike Hepher, and many works of street art in the back alleys. Whatever your artistic flavour may be, Fernie’s art scene offers an abundance of creative diversity that will be sure to connect with almost everyone. Book a night or two at the Fernie Fox Hotel, and come see what you will connect with. See what is happening at the Arts Station here. Connect with the Fernie Arts Co-op here.
