Waste reduction
- We have replaced individual bottles of shampoo and conditioner with dispensers.
- We have implemented a solid waste diversion program for guests and staff members.
- We do not use plastic bag liners in guest room garbage cans. The cans are wiped down every day.
- We recycle and reuse where ever possible
Energy saving
- We’ve installed 54 kilowatts of solar panels on the hotel roof to provide clean energy to power the hotel, reducing the impact on the energy supply for local residents.
- We have replaced all incandescent light bulbs with new LED bulbs.
- We have installed LED lighting behind all signage.
- We’ve installed 2 electric vehicle charger onsite.
- We have an ongoing internal energy audit, and regularly implement changes based on results.
- Have an energy management system installed to turn lights and air conditioning off in empty guest rooms.
- Implement a policy of purchasing low energy equipment for electrical devices such as fridges, TV’s microwaves.
- All guest room fridges are controlled by our energy management system meaning when a room is empty the fridge is not needlessly running.
- Replaced hotel linen washer and dryers with latest-model energy-efficient versions.
- All laundry is done in cold water.
Water saving
- We have a guest towel reuse/bed linen changing program in place to save water.
- We have purchased the most efficient hot water heater(s) on the market “The Cyclone”.
- We have installed water saving showerheads and taps without sacrificing water pressure.
Environment, Community & Education
- Educate guests about how they can make a positive contribution to local biodiversity and conservation efforts.
- Encourage guests to explore the destination beyond the boundaries of the property.
- Include environmental aspects into employee training, such as how to reduce energy, water and waste.
- We have purchased our own outdoor wildlife-proof garbage containers.
- We encourage guests to buy products that are made locally.
- Support and actively contribute to local community development projects.
- We shop local as much as possible.
These are just some of the many ways hotels can become more sustainable. For us, it’s not about “gatekeeping” the changes and choices we’ve made, because we want to see more hotels in BC take steps to reducing their emissions and impact.
