Some of our initiatives are visible and others less so.
You will notice for example that we do not have any tent cards or information binders in our guest rooms. In addition to reducing the use of paper, and moving our guest information brochures and pamphlets online, we have invested in the following actions to minimize our carbon footprint, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and decrease our property’s energy consumption. All in an effort to become the most sustainable hotel in BC.
Environmental Initiatives
We’re continually reviewing how we use energy, water, products and other resources. Together, they help us reduce waste and run a more efficient, responsible hotel.
Smarter Energy Use
Our 54 kW solar panel system supplies renewable energy to the hotel, while energy-efficient heating, cooling, lighting, and ENERGY STAR® appliances help reduce unnecessary power use.
Behind the scenes, our Control4 Energy Management System gives us detailed insight into energy consumption across the property. We can review usage room by room, and even plug by plug, to pinpoint exactly where further efficiencies can be made.
Reducing Waste and Single-Use Products
Wherever it’s practical, we continue to replace disposable products with reusable and refillable alternatives.
Our water bottle refill programme has already helped eliminate more than 30,000 plastic bottles. Additionally, our zero-waste coffee station offers a simple way to cut down on single-use packaging.
Refillable bathroom dispensers have replaced individual shampoo and conditioner bottles. Recycling and waste-diversion programs are available for guests and staff.
Conserving Water and Resources
Our water-saving measures include low-flow showerheads and taps, efficient hot water equipment, and guest towel and bed linen reuse programmes.
On-demand housekeeping further reduces unnecessary laundry, water use, cleaning products and energy consumption during multi-night stays.
Responsible Products and Purchasing
We seek out lower-impact bathroom amenities, soaps and cleaning products whenever suitable options are available.
Our purchasing decisions also consider energy efficiency, durability, waste and packaging.
We source locally whenever we can to reduce transportation needs and support local businesses in our community.
Cleaner Ways to Get Around
Complimentary EV charging gives guests with electric vehicles a convenient charging option during their stay.
Our free guest e-bikes provide another way to explore Fernie without relying on a vehicle, so it’s easier to experience the town and surrounding area at a slower pace.
Continuous Monitoring and Improvement
Sustainability at Fernie Fox Hotel is an ongoing effort. We regularly review our energy consumption, equipment performance, waste and day-to-day operations, always looking for practical new ways to use fewer resources and operate more efficiently.
